How do you know your glass pool fence meets Australian Standards?
Australia has strong laws and high standards for glass pool fences and gates to protect children from drowning. There are two Australian standards for home pool safety: AS 1926 for pool fences and AS 2820 for pool fence gates. In all states it is mandatory to have an effective barrier around your pool.
The most important things are that your fence needs to be at least 1.2 metres high, you must have a self-latching gate that can self-close from any position and your fence must not contain any gaps larger than 100mm. You only require a handrail or top rail if there is a drop of one metre or more. I.e. the fence is going on a veranda that is a metre or more higher than ground level.
One of the additional benefits of choosing to use glass pool fencing is that, while glass fencing is extremely tough, it is also a difficult material to climb and doesn't have the gaps between palings that more traditional fencing can be prone to. Glass pool fences are very sheer and smooth and as such children will find the fence very difficult to climb, as there are no handholds or footholds to be accessed. You must also display an approved resuscitation sign near the pool.
The most important part of a pool fence is the gate which must be self-closing and self-latching. The hinge and latch must be designed to be reliable and durable in the tough, family pool environment with constant use and exposure to chemicals, water and the weather. The hinges must be NATA tested to be reliable for ten years. This means they must be tested for 10,000 cycles of opening and closing. All hinges that have been NATA tested are issued with a NATA certificate.
If your swimming pool is new, or existing, then the fence must be inspected and certified by the local council or building certifier before the pool is filled. We provide a compliance certificate on completion of your fence.
How strong is the glass used in our fencing?
Safety toughened glass is manufactured to AS/NZS2208 and 2080 and is Grade A safety glass as per AS1288 (you will find the certified stamp in the corner of the standard panels, however special dimension panels do not have the stamp). We use 10mm and 12mm thickness glass, and 8mm glass on gate panels. The glass edges are polished and arrised, making handling easier. Toughened glass is up to 500% stronger than annealed glass and is therefore more resistant to thermal breakage and can withstand greater wind loads. On rare occasions toughened glass can break for what seems to be no apparent reason. Most often however, breakage is usually due to surface damage or excessive loading on the toughened glass. Please see our video demonstration of toughened glass breaking to give you an idea of how it reacts when it breaks into small cubes, which are less likely to cause cuts.
How much maintenance is required?
As a pool owner you are responsible for the ongoing maintenance of your pool fence. All products placed in an external environmental require some form of cleaning; stainless steel is not maintenance free but maintenance friendly. Washing regularly will reduce the risk of tea staining. For best results wash with soap or mild detergent and warm water following by a cold water rinse. Glass can be cleaned with a bucket of soapy water.
Will the core drilling damage my tiles?
If care is taken, core drilling should not damage tiles. Removing the spinning core from the hole should be done sensibly. If the tile has not been originally glued down properly, there is a possibility it will crack.
How many frameless clamps do I need to use?
Two spigots are used to clamp one sheet of glass. If the sheet of glass is extensive, it is recommended additional clamps are installed to it.
Can you cut your feet on the cover plates?
Our spigot cover plates and rings are slightly raised, ensuring no sharp edges.
What panel widths are available?
We have many standard incremental sizes to suit most projects, however custom panels (known as special and raked panels) are made at a reasonable additional cost. Each project has its own individual traits, and Dimension One Glass fencing can solve “problem” areas using a range of solutions to provide anunbroken fencing eyeline.
